According to the statistical analysis by 2023, the global prevalence of obesity is 45.1%, and the prevalence of men with waist circumference ≥102 cm or women ≥88cm (central obesity) is 34.9%. Many people do not think of fat, but with the high blood sugar, fatty liver, high blood fat, high blood pressure, high uric acid and other diseases one after another, which means that obesity has gradually become a rat in the street.
We visited the obesity camp at Xijing Hospital and interviewed participants one by one, and we learned that the problem is far more serious than we thought. Obese people have become a vulnerable group in society, Not only do they face the accompanying high blood sugar, fatty liver, high blood fat, high blood pressure, high uric acid and other diseases, but also face discrimination, ridicule and discrimination because of obesity. What's more, it has gradually become a social stereotype, which causes great problems for obese people in job hunting and to the conclusion that there is no direct correlation between obesity and psychological stress and the side effects that we have traditionally thought of as obesity.
We began to pay attention to whether we can directly solve the problem of obesity, so we interviewed Professor Ruihua Yang, chairman of the Nutrition Teaching and Research Department of Air Force Military Medical University and the maternal and Child branch of the Nutrition Society, She said: "The current obesity problem appears to be related to people only intake and no exercise, but in fact, it is an inevitable trend, is the development of natural biology and economic and social development of conflict dislocation, resulting in our now prone to obesity.
After the interview, we found that obesity is related to the age syndrome, since we can't change it on a large scale, what can we do for the world in this regard? After brainstorming, we wanted to start with emotiors. Weldid a massive job,we looked at 257 random people based on BMl and psychologicalseales, and we came to the conclusion that there is no direct correlation between obesity and psychological stress and side effects that we have traditionally thought of as obesity.
What is it that is affecting the world's seemingly obesity-related diseases and psychological problems on such a large scale? With these questions, we interviewed Professor Ji Gang, a scholar from Yangtze River, who said that obesity is an extremely common problem in modern people. People seem to attribute all diseases, emotional abnormalities, social uniformity and other problems to obesity. but the real harm to national health is the metabolic syndrome caused by obesity step by step.
Director Ji Gang also said that in fact, our problems such as disease detection actually start from metabolic disorders. He stressed that we can actually be a healthy fat person, but the metabolic syndrome is when there are a lot of problems. It is the appearance of metabolic syndrome that causes abnormal blood sugar, blood lipids, blood pressure, insulin sensitivity and so on.
Not only that, we also found that metabolic syndrome has a significant impact on people's mood. In our follow-up of patients undergoing bariatric surgery before, during, and after surgery, we found that among the obese patients, those who actually had metabolic syndrome showed significant psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, and interpersonal sensitivity. After bariatric surgery, the patients' mood improved significantly. This indicates that psychological problems are not significantly related to obesity, but are closely related to the metabolic syndrome caused by obesity.
In this view, obesity itself is not terrible, but the metabolic syndrome caused by obesity has become an urgent problem to be solved.
During the interview with Professor Ji Gang, we learned that although weight loss surgery can alleviate the symptoms of metabolic syndrome in clinical practice. it is often a problem for patients because of the high cost of surgery and the fear and pain associated with the operation.
Is there any way to avoid the symptoms of metabolic syndrome before the surgery? After communicating with Professor Ruihua Yang, an expert in weight loss, we learned that metabolic syndrome is associated with its specific pathway in the human body, and early screening of metabolic syndrome can be achieved through portable detection, so as to reduce patients' financial pressure, reduce patients' mental fear of surgery and reduce the physical trauma caused by the body after surgery.
So we began to take a closer look at existing metabolic syndrome and its detection methods. In current clinical practice, metabolic syndrome can be clearly diagnosed by measuring blood glucose, blood lipids, blood pressure, insulin sensitivity and other methods, as well as laboratory and imaging methods. However, due to the weak awareness of physical examination of residents, the high pressure of work and life, the high cost and low sensitivity of hospital detection are difficult resulting in the failure of early detection of metabolic syndrome by physical examination in most patients.
Therefore, we designed "FAT-test" (fast amplified Trace-RNA test), which aims to solve the difficult problem of low sensitivity and difficulty in early diagnosis of metabolic syndrome in social life, and achieve home detection, trace detection, and rapid detection. The application of related results can not only be used as the early diagnosis of metabolic syndrome, but also can be applied to the early screening of pathogenic microbial infection, tumor detection and other diseases.
