We have made different content for people of all ages.
At first, our team went to primary school and introduced the basic knowledge of metal corrosion to the children who had just come into contact with the knowledge of biological science. Together with the children, we discussed the common corrosive items in life and briefly introduced the reasons for their corrosion. During the activity, the children learned about the basic structure of E. coli by making clay models of E. coli. Our team then gave the metal blocks used in our experiment to the children to observe closely, so as to let them understand the different corrosion states of metals in a more vivid way. Finally, we interviewed several children, they said that today's activity let them learn a lot of biological knowledge, and they hope to have the opportunity to learn science in such an interesting way in the future. We gave each child a souvenir at the end of the activity.
Subsequently, our team went to junior high school and senior high school, and formulated different science popularization plans according to their different learning contents. For example, in our high school presentations, we talked about molecular biology and showed videos of the experimental group performing PCR and electrophoresis. We believe that these links will enable them to better understand biological knowledge and make up for the lack of experimental conditions. In high school, we also held a small science knowledge contest based on the biological knowledge they learned and the content of our lectures. Most of the students got good results in the contest, which also proved the necessity and feasibility of science education.
On university campuses, we also conducted a series of outreach efforts. During open days on the university campus, we set up poster boards to introduce our team and projects to students and parents, so that new students can feel the charm of synthetic biology and iGEM. In addition, we held debate competitions, arranged information corridors, and broadcast campus radio to further promote our program.
At the same time, our team considered the issue of equality in education and wanted to make a contribution to the students in the mountain area. Therefore, we contacted the teachers from the poverty alleviation mountainous area of the school and gave lectures to the students of Changping County Vocational and Technical School of Yunnan Province on five aspects: what is synthetic biology, metal corrosion, the harm of metal corrosion, metal corrosion protection, and the prevention of metal corrosion by microorganisms.
While introducing them to the related biological knowledge of metal corrosion, our team also had a deeper understanding of their major. Everyone got something out of the presentation!
In addition to the students, our team members also conducted science popularization for the residents in the community. Mainly combined with common sense of life for the community residents to introduce corrosion related knowledge and some anti-corrosion tips. Brochures were made and distributed to let residents know more about the hazards of corrosion and the formation of corrosion.
To let all sectors of society and even the whole world better understand scientific knowledge is the purpose of each NEU-China team, and it is also our initial intention to establish NEU IGEM wechat public account. In 2023, our team has released more than ten push articles according to the relevant knowledge of the project. In order to let the world know us better, we have also written "multilingual" chapters, including English, French, Russian, Arabic and Spanish. I hope to take this opportunity to help more people in the world.
