In June, we visited Hunnan Second Primary School in Shenyang City. In Class 2 of Grade 4, we provided a concise introduction to the concepts of metal corrosion and synthetic biology. We presented our team along with fundamental details about our project. We brought along small carbon steel samples displaying various degrees of corrosion to the classroom, affording each student the opportunity to observe corroded and non-corroded steel. The young students exhibited keen interest in the phenomenon of metal corrosion, examining the samples closely. Through engaging videos and explanations from members of our outreach team, the students obtained a succinct understanding of the types of microbiologically-induced corrosion and the underlying principles. Ultimately, under the guidance of our outreach team, the children employed colored clay to craft a model of Escherichia coli, thereby gaining a rudimentary comprehension of bacterial structure. Post-activity, we distributed iGEM memorabilia and handmade cards to the children, with the aspiration that this event would kindle their interest and establish a solid foundation for their future scholastic pursuits.
Corrosion is ubiquitous and a common problem faced by all countries in the world. It is known as metal cancer. In order to further popularize the harm of metal corrosion and improve the awareness of anti-corrosion, the NEU-CHINA team held an online science popularization seminar on the theme of "metal corrosion" in Tencent Conference. Teaching related knowledge to students at vocational and technical schools in Changping County, Yunnan Province.
At the presentation, the members of the NEU-CHINA team preached from five aspects: what is synthetic biology, metal corrosion, the harm of metal corrosion, metal corrosion protection, and the prevention of metal corrosion by microorganisms. They answered the questions about automobile anticorrosion technology in vocational and technical schools, and introduced the relevant basic knowledge of metal corrosion. In a vivid and clear explanation, the anticorrosion skills in industry and life will be taught to everyone.
The event allowed the students of Changping County Vocational and Technical School in Yunnan Province to learn about corrosion related knowledge, expand their knowledge, and have a deeper understanding of their professional vehicle maintenance and protection. Everyone got something out of the presentation!
During open days on the university campus, we set up poster boards to introduce our team and projects to students and parents who come to inquire about admissions policy, to show people our work and efforts, and to let new students feel the charm of synthetic biology and iGEM. After the activity, many students took the initiative to contact us to learn more about biology and want to join the biology family, which is very exciting. This made us realize that the publicity project is not only a task, but also a great opportunity to showcase the academic atmosphere of the college.
We gave a talk about our project in Dalian No. 20 Senior High School. In the school's multipurpose classroom, we talked about molecular biology and explained the simple part of our experiment on mussel bysin. We also introduce biotechnology methods such as polymerase chain reaction and electrophoresis.
We answered every question the students asked and expanded their knowledge of the biology relevant to the experiment. After the speech, we conducted a questionnaire survey of all the students present and collected the results.
Subsequently, we also carried out knowledge competitions on campus, aiming to collect the knowledge of high school students about metal corrosion and biological experiments, and further transform our publicity results. Many students have achieved quite good results, proving that our education is effective and meaningful, which will become an important step in our popularization of synthetic biology.
On July 26, NEU-CHINA team members held an online science popularization seminar on the theme of "Metal corrosion" at Tencent Conference, and taught relevant knowledge to the students of Binhe Road Branch School of Shenyang No. 3 or 4 Middle School Education Group.
The lectures are mainly divided into four aspects: IGEM competition introduction, synthetic biology, metal corrosion and corrosion prevention. First of all, what is the IGEM competition, called the International Genetic Engineering Machine Competition; Secondly, it introduces what is synthetic biology. Then, a short video introduces how corrosion is formed, what types of corrosion are divided into, and the losses caused by corrosion are analyzed through data. Finally, we introduce some anti-corrosion tips.
At the end of the event, the participants were invited to fill out a questionnaire and get feedback on this information session.
On August 1st, NEU-CHINA team members conducted science popularization for community residents in Munda Community, Baita Street, Dalat Banner, Ordos City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. They introduced corrosion related knowledge and some anti-corrosion tips to community residents based on common sense of life. And the production of publicity brochures, distributed, can let everyone more detailed understanding of the harm of corrosion, corrosion formation and anti-corrosion tips.
We also distributed brochures and brief explanations to residents and community workers at plazas and community service centers in the community to answer some relevant questions.
At the end of September, we held a debate competition in our school about the prospect and future of Marine metal preservation. We hope that through this debate competition, new students can get in touch with some application cases of synthetic biology and have greater research interest in it. In addition, we also set up an information corridor in the teaching building, and took the initiative to contact the radio station to carry out special reports, introducing our project and iGEM to students from different colleges. Many students expressed their desire to participate in meaningful competitions like iGEM. We are also very happy that more and more people have recognized our efforts and efforts.
We also set up a wechat public account of the team, and regularly released the knowledge related to metal corrosion and our work progress. When we went to various places to publicize the project, we all publicized the public account simultaneously, so we got fans from different regions, different professions and different ages, and the reading amount of the article was also considerable. In this way, we hope to let more people know about our work, let more people know how synthetic biology can be applied, and build a mass base for future teams.
