Overview

Our team attaches special importance to the safety of the team members and the community during the project development process. Therefore, we first found a standard secure work area from the beginning.

We held a special team meeting on the safety measures guidelines, and ensured that we would not bring any synthetic biology products out of the laboratory, and published relevant popular science articles to the public on the topic of laboratory safety.

In addition, we used non-pathogenic organisms throughout the project without any specimens obtained from outside the laboratory and from non-traditional suppliers, decreasing the risk of hazard exposure to the team and the environment.

We guarantee that human and animal experiments are not included throughout the project, which will not increase the risk of antimicrobial resistance, do not use gene drive technology and coronavirus samples, and all human subject studies strictly obey relevant Chinese laws and regulations.

Lab Safety Measures

Our work environment is a standard microbiology laboratory. For all experiments in this project, we used an open workbench area, ultra-clean workbench, shaker, incubator, refrigerators and ovens for storing various enzymes or chemicals. Under iGEM regulations, our project does not involve any prohibited activities, and all the organisms and parts used are on the whitelist of the competition.

Living organisms and Parts

As part of our experimental procedures, we used microorganisms that ensure safety on the whitelist, such as E.coliDH-5 Alpha and Invsc1 Yeast Strain, to express and propagate our vectors.

Managing Risks

PI and laboratory researchers advised us and eliminated risks in our experimental work, while also ensuring that the project follows the Ethics Approval Protocol of Biomedical Research Involving Human Subjects issued by the National Health Commission and the Human Genetic Resources Management Regulations of PRC.

As far as our team itself is concerned, we have received professional experimental safety and protection training to avoid any dangerous situation of improper use of experimental equipment and reagents. We are also taught, laboratory access rules, safety codes for microbiological operations, disinfection and sterilization methods, contingency procedures plans, laboratory sample transportation rules, fire protection, and electrical safety rules.

Not only do we provide special training to all team members, whether they will perform laboratory work, but we also disseminate the safety knowledge we learn to the public in the form of popular science.

Relevant regulations

China has formulated the Biosafety Law of the People's Republic of China to safeguard national security, prevent and respond to biosafety risks, and safeguard people's lives and health. In addition, our Hubei University has also formulated Hubei University Laboratory Safety Guidelines.
