Language inclusivity
Visually impaired people
(1)We created audio descriptions for our promotional videos.
(2)Each image is set with a "View larger" option for observation. The color scheme is relatively comfortable
Hearing impaired people
All of our videos are captioned or have captioned files.
People with reading disabilities
(1)We employ clear and concise language, including careful consideration of word choice and phrasing to ensure our content is easily understood and engaging.
(2)Additionally, we utilise high colour contrast to optimize text legibility. Our flowcharts feature bold headings to facilitate comprehension.
Choice of language
(1)When communicating with different ethnic groups, we use bilingualism in the introduction of science. For example, in the "Share with you" cultural exchange salon, more than 30 students from the Sino-Foreign Exchange Association and more than 10 international students participated in the activity. After the bilingual science popularization of synthetic biology, we introduced ourselves and divided into two groups to discuss the problems related to treatment of diseases with synthetic biology. We are very happy to see friends from different countries get along well with each other.
(2)In addition, when we hold activities, we make bilingual posters for everyone to understand.
Format inclusivity
Graphic design
We invited students from Nanjing Medical University to participate in our autism themed poster design competition, and we were delighted to see all the participants unleash their imagination and express their love for autistic children. We received a total of 13 posters, some of which are shown below.
Photography
While promoting synthetic biology, we aim to inform more people about autistic children. Therefore, we opened the photography channel to collect works related to blessing autistic people. Some of the photography works are shown below.
Outreach
High school students express their understanding of synthetic biology through design. From the High School Affiliated To Nanjing Normal University, some students participated in this activity. All had the same goal of creating their own scientific interpretation and expressing it through art. We are thrilled to witness their artistic ability, seeing their cheerful faces as they create stunning pieces
Group inclusivity
Educate diverse groups of people about synthetic biology and autism
Preschool children
Our main focus is on individuals with autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders, especially children, who are typically young, struggle with language and social abilities, and have difficulty integrating into the outside world. We go to Haizhixing autistic children rehabilitation center to patiently tell them stories, play games with them and try to break down the barriers between them and the outside world. We interviewed families of children with autism, and their voices could be heard more widely. At the same time, we also learned a lot of little-known information, such as food intolerance. Recent research and medical intervention have shown that children with autism often suffer from various gut issues caused by food intolerance. The underlying mechanism has not been revealed, which brings difficulties to treatment. We hope that more people will pay attention to this issue.
Primary School Students
We have been to Nanjing Fuzimiao Primary School, to teach the children synthetic biology knowledge, and teach them to create leaf specimens.
Junior high school students
On the day of Mother's Day, we held a Mother's Day Thanksgiving activity in the Red Hill Branch of the 13th Middle School, preached the origin and significance of Mother's Day, and guided junior high school students to be grateful to their mothers.
Senior high school students
We arranged high school students from the High School Affiliated To Nanjing Normal University to visit the State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine of Nanjing Medical University. The laboratory manager personally led the students to visit, and the NJMU-China members and the team’s primary PI accompanied the whole visit. After the visit, we carried out science popularization and model making of synthetic biology in the conference room.

Diversity of activities
(1)We instruct high school students to fabricate synthetic biology models out of clay, such as antibodies, t-RNA, phages, E. coli, etc. Each student used his or her imagination to create abstract biological concepts on paper. We also used the movie "The Wandering Earth" to organize the Synthetic Biology to help the Wandering Earth program, integrating synthetic biology into space exploration, highlighting our prospects and reflections on the development prospects of synthetic biology.
(2)In addition, we planned a sitcom on the theme of synthetic biology anti-counterfeiting. The humorous content left a deep impression on the audience, which not only popularized synthetic biology but also revealed its existing problems.
(3)We went to Nanjing Fuzimiao Primary School and taught the children about synthetic biology and how to make leaf specimens. It was a fun and meaningful experience, not only for the children, but also for the fun of learning. We at HP were also amazed by the children's wonderful knowledge and imagination of biology, and thus gained a new understanding of synthetic biology.
(4)In order to promote synthetic biology, we have created a synthetic biology science handbook to help children understand some simple concepts in synthetic biology.
