Since our theme this year is still intestinal, we have re-contacted the team of last year's Gut Alliance and plan to organize the second Gut Alliance, which this year includes LZU-CHINA, SUSTech-CHINA, UM-Macau and CPU-CHINA. After the successful formation of the team, we discussed our next step plan through a meeting, and made a preliminary plan for the follow-up progress of the Gut Alliance. All teams participated enthusiastically and provided many meaningful and feasible directions. We look forward to contributing through continued collaboration and innovation to use synthetic biology to address gut issues and raise public awareness of gut health.

Inheriting and innovating, we have organized the following events in 2023:

1. Questionnaire survey

Gut health is an important part of our physical health, affecting our immune system, digestive function and overall health. To better understand the relationship between people's personal habits and lifestyle and gut health, we developed a questionnaire.

The questionnaire involved five team projects, including food intolerance, inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal infection, irrational nutritional intake, gut-related cancer and problems related to genetic engineering modification. We believe that through extensive data collection and analysis, we can better understand the full picture of gut health and provide more targeted recommendations for the development of health promotion measures.

Questionnaire poster

The survey was completed by more than 632 people. A total of 632 people filled out the Chinese version and 73 people filled out the English version. At the same time, after the distribution of our English version of the questionnaire, the BOKU-Vienna team was very interested in our Gut Alliance and wrote the popular science handbook of Gut Alliance with us.

Combining the global filling in, we get the following results:

1. Low understanding of enteric-related problems: 80.06% of respondents thought gastroenteritis was IBD.

2. Lack of awareness of symptoms: When asked about common symptoms associated with intestinal inflammation, on average only 38% of respondents were able to correctly answer the relevant symptoms. Most respondents had relatively good cognition of common symptoms such as diarrhea and constipation, but other had low awareness of other symptoms such as fatty liver and indigestion.

3. Most of the respondents understand the relationship between eating habits and intestinal health: In the survey, we also know that 94.15% of the respondents are aware of the importance of reasonable diet structure and adequate intake of dietary fiber for intestinal health, but a small number of respondents still have some misunderstandings about the relationship between eating habits and intestinal health.

4. The public has little awareness of synthetic biology: only 9.02% of the respondents have a good understanding of transgenic technology, and 45.57% of the respondents have a basic understanding of it, but cannot explain it clearly.

Based on the above survey results, we came to the following conclusions:

We need to strengthen the public's popularization of enteric issues and synthetic biology related knowledge, strengthen the popularization of intestinal health knowledge, emphasize the importance of dietary habits on intestinal health and promote an active lifestyle, so we have written a popular science article on intestinal health (click here to learn more). At the same time, many popular science activities were carried out and received a good response (click here to learn more). These measures can help increase public health awareness and behavior to further promote intestinal health.

2.Gut Alliance Brochure

At the same time, in order to help people better understand the intestinal health knowledge in detail, we have produced a brochure of intestinal knowledge. The Brochure was written by all teams at the Gut Alliance to focus on gut health from a public perspective. In our section, we wrote "Those Things about IBD", giving people a detailed introduction of what IBD is, the development trend of IBD, the main symptoms and causes, the current treatment methods and drawbacks, as well as synthetic biology and the treatment of IBD. We hope that through these popular science, people can have a better understanding of IBD. Make a positive impact on people and also bring hope and support to people with IBD!

3. iG20

Unity is strength. We came up with this iG20 event in order to create more interesting HP activities and attract more social attention through closer cooperation. We learned from the example of the G20, which is the second most influential organization in the world after the United Nations, leading the world economy.

There are 28 teams in iG20. We cooperated with teams from many places and schools to shoot and edit short videos of relevant real scenes in their respective schools and places of interest in their respective regions, and obtained three shocking iG20 activity videos, creating a high social influence.

3.1 Team introduction video

In the first video, we first introduced our school and the school motto "Honesty and diligence" at the school gate, then briefly introduced our overall experimental design in the laboratory, and finally all the team members shouted our slogan by the Ming Dynasty City Wall in Xi'an: We put a lot of blood and sweat into this competition, put in countless days and nights of hard work, and now we are proud to announce that everything is ready, we are ready to show our results!

3.2 Synthetic biology science relay video

In this video, the 28 teams of iG20 use relay to jointly popularize the origin, influence and iGEM related content, hoping to increase the public's awareness of synthetic biology and iGEM in this way.

3.3 "iGEM 2023,We are coming!

In the third video, the entire iG20 team chanted together: "iGEM 2023,We are coming!" And make relevant gestures. This short but powerful slogan conveys our determination and conviction. We are not only a team, but also a large family, and we will work together to meet the challenges of 2023!

Every member of iG20 is an important member of the family. we support each other, encourage each other, and form a close bond and deep friendship in the team. We will learn together, grow together, and strive for the success of the team. No matter how difficult and challenging we encounter, we will stick to our original intention and move forward hand in hand to shine on the stage of iGEM 2023 and write a new chapter for the brilliance of iGEM!

4. Memes

I. In order to make synthetic biology more vivid and easy to understand and closer to our lives, we have designed a set of E. coli memes and have uploaded them all to the WeChat platform for the public's daily use. (Click here to learn more)

Meme content

The Gut Alliance will always be committed to improving the public's awareness of intestinal health, guiding people to develop healthy living habits, and ultimately improving the overall level of intestinal health, jointly promoting the development of intestinal health, and contributing our strength to global health!

5. WeChat communication group

In addition, we have established a WeChat communication group for the Gut Alliance to provide a platform for communication and cooperation, and iGEM members of the alliance can also provide valuable experience for teams interested in intestinal research in the future. More teams and partners are welcome to join us and discuss together.
