The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, are a set of 17 interconnected and ambitious objectives established by the United Nations to address global challenges and create a more sustainable and equitable world. Adopted in September 2015, these goals provide a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030.

Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

Our project is based on the aim to achieve cleaner and greener sources of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) using synthetic biology. Presently SAF is very expensive, hence we also plan to reduce its cost. Clean energy is the way to the future as fossil fuels are limited and bound to get over, not to forget their humongous carbon footprint, which is one of the biggest reasons of climate change.

Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation

Even if we are able to engineer our strain of yeast to produce drop-in SAF, we need to scale up to mass produce in order to be able to cater to the aviation market as well as reduce its cost. This involves financial investment and infrastructure. Innovation is one of the key driving forces in the industrial sector.

Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

Sustainability is the way to the future. We are at a stage where technology is ever-expanding, which is a positive sign, but it becomes negative when it has more repercussions. People should understand the need and want of every service or product they use. The aviation sector is a gift to humanity as it has brought the world closer, now it's our time to reform it to be more sustainable with group efforts.

Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

Responsible action is our decision to try to develop a better SAF and commercialise it. Responsible consumption is something we tried to publicise using our Education and Communication activities.

Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

The climate crisis is the motivation behind our project. We seriously need to rethink our ways and redefine them in a more sustainable way or else we will be facing the wrath of nature in the worst of forms. We understand that the aviation sector is a necessity in today’s world, the least we could do is make sure that it does not have or has a lesser environmental impact.
