Introduction
“Education? Just a piece of cake for students from Beijing Normal University!”...
And then we were heavily criticized by the team BNUZH-China 2022. They told us that they actually faced a sobering truth - their efforts, while sincere, were met with lukewarm responses. The spark they yearned to ignite seemed to elude their grasp.
They tried so hard but failed to have everyone’s attention, not knowing what to do.
And neither did us at the very first beginning.
One fateful evening, amidst the hushed corridors of our educational journey, a conversation unfolded that would change our trajectory:
And then we were heavily criticized by the team BNUZH-China 2022. They told us that they actually faced a sobering truth - their efforts, while sincere, were met with lukewarm responses. The spark they yearned to ignite seemed to elude their grasp.
They tried so hard but failed to have everyone’s attention, not knowing what to do.
And neither did us at the very first beginning.
One fateful evening, amidst the hushed corridors of our educational journey, a conversation unfolded that would change our trajectory:
"Why is it so hard to engage people?" one team member mused, frustration lining their voice.
Another responded with a sigh, "Maybe we're missing something essential. Maybe we need to evoke not just
their minds but also their hearts."
It was a moment of profound realization. A ray of light piercing through the darkest clouds, the idea
emerged - why not use ART as our medium? Why not infuse creativity into science education? Art
can be the key to unlock hearts and minds!
Yet, we knew that art had a universal appeal, but its impact varied from person to person. The question
was, how could we harness that? Art, after all, is just a cover, a suitable “coat” for all knowledge.
However, the content is not for everyone. Kids might be attracted by fascinating pictures, yet
the elderly would never spend a whole night watching child plays.
Art is indeed unique and profound, yet not in every heart art be found.
Therefore, we decided to embark on a transformative journey. We believed that the popularization of
synthetic science should be for everyone, targeting all age groups.
Our journey spanned 4 distinct levels: SCHOOL, CITY, NATION AND GLOBE, each posing unique
challenges and opportunities.
At the school level, we organized lab visits, university-level science conferences, safety debates, and programming competitions. These engaged young minds and encouraged artistic expressions of complex scientific concepts.
In Zhuhai City from Guangdong Province, we collaborated with firms and our professors, conducting science popularization events for audiences of all ages, featuring speeches and conferences.
Nationally, we developed tailored educational programs, accounting for regional nuances, and distributed printed cancer science handbooks across the country.
Globally, we recorded with multi-lingual podcasts, shared general science articles in our Official Account on WeChat and Instagram, and posted several YouTube videos as well. These virtual experiences transcended borders, making science a universal language.
Our precision-driven approach ensured science's accessibility to all, regardless of age or background. We successfully bridged art and science, uniting hearts and minds worldwide.

Overview
BNUZH-China team constantly engages in profound reflection at every stage of our project: Are we truly
fulfilling our responsibility to the world and making a positive impact? Have we met our initial
objectives? This mindset has led us to undertake two significant iterations in our Education.
During the first iteration, we focused on enhancing the format of science outreach. Recognizing that we wanted to captivate individuals beyond the field of biology and allow them to experience the allure of synthetic biology, we chose to wrap the otherwise dry written knowledge in an artistic package. This gave birth to the spectacular "Art Alive" series of events. By blending art with diverse disciplines such as visual arts, music, theater, literature, and cinema, we injected a vibrant spirit into our scientific outreach.
Moving into the second iteration, our attention shifted towards expanding the target audience for our Education. Throughout our exploration of the artistic realm, an epiphany struck us: art, indeed, as a powerful tool, is ultimately just a vessel suited for all types of knowledge. To genuinely broaden the scope of our popular science initiatives, we understood the need to combine the enchantment of art with finely-tailored audience segmentation. Thus, after vigorous brainstorming sessions, BNUZH-China crafted a comprehensive range of popular science programs catering to diverse groups. Initiating from our school level and progressing to encompass entire Zhuhai cities, nations, and ultimately the world, we incrementally amplify the reach of our scientific communication endeavors.

"Bio-film Salon offers a visually captivating experience that stimulates the mind. Upon careful reflection, one can unravel a multitude of foreshadowing elements and intricate details that lead to a thought-provoking conclusion.
From an abstract perspective, Bio-film Salon beautifully portrays the infiltration of shared habits within distinct microcosms, akin to the ever-changing forms seen in synthetic biology experiments. Some characters undergo transformations into physical representations like flowers (a choice made by the physicists), while others evolve into forms resembling fungi. The final obliteration can be seen as a metaphorical representation of a new life emerging. Many things change, yet certain elements persist, such as the enduring love between the male and female leads. Additionally, the poignant scene of an adult holding a child among the flower or fungus people might symbolize the continuity of parental love, possibly derived from the love of the individuals who sacrificed themselves in the synthetic transformation.

Unlocking Genetic Engineering: The Power of Homologous
Recombination
🕢 Time: 7:30 PM
📍 Location: Online Seminar
On June 19, 2023, at 7:30 PM, our team BNUZH-China 2023 teamed up with Nanjing Nuoweizan Biotechnology Co., Ltd. to host an online seminar about "Homologous Recombination Cloning Technology." Many students attended, eager to learn.
🧬 What We Covered: 🧬
⚫Unveiling the inner workings of Homologous Recombination Cloning.
⚫Discovering where and how these techniques can revolutionize genetic research.
⚫Tackling common challenges and finding solutions for successful cloning experiments.
Our main goal
Whether a biology enthusiast, a student, or simply curious about the magic happening inside the lab, this seminar could provide something for any participant.
What we did
In the first part, the speaker explained what molecular cloning is. It's a way to put together tiny pieces of DNA from different sources outside of a living thing. Then, people can make lots of copies of this DNA inside a living cell.
In the second part, the speaker went deeper into how homologous recombination cloning works. It's all about mixing up pieces of DNA from people’s project and putting them together inside a special kind of molecule. To make this work, one may need two things: the pieces of DNA should have specific ends, and they shouldn't be round. Then, the speaker quickly talked about the two main ways to do homologous recombination cloning: Gibson assembly and doing it without a special molecule called ligase.
In the third section, the speaker gave quick examples of how people can use these cloning techniques. First, they showed the step-by-step process for changing just one part of the DNA, like changing one word in a sentence. Then, they talked about why homologous recombination cloning is better than other ways. Lastly, they briefly explained how to make different changes in DNA, like fixing one thing or two things at once.
Reflection:
This seminar was a big help for our team members and other students who want to learn more and get better at experiments. We want to say a big thank you to Nanjing Nuoweizan Biotechnology Co., Ltd. for supporting us, and we're excited about the next chance to learn and share our knowledge.

CancerCare: Seniors and Health Wisdom
Introduction:
Why did we implement “CancerCare” Series?
Based on data provided by the Zhuhai Cancer Association, we identified that cancer incidence and mortality rates are highest among the elderly population. Therefore, we made the elderly a primary focus of our cancer awareness efforts.
In this city-wide cancer education campaign, we gave special attention to educating seniors. Additionally, we discovered that areas with lower economic development, akin to rural regions, faced limited healthcare resources and lacked cancer awareness. This led us to concentrate our limited time and resources on cancer education in economically disadvantaged areas.
Through our connections with New Madun Village and our fellow graduate Li Yijun from Beijing Normal University, we obtained contact information for three villages: Nanao Village, Xiazhou Village, and Yulin Village. Prior to the events, our team members conducted online research and surprisingly found distinct disparities in development levels among these villages, with Nanao Village being the least developed, Yulin Village the most developed, and Xiazhou Village falling in between. This unexpected finding provided an opportunity for us to enhance our understanding of the cancer landscape in society. Therefore, alongside our educational activities, we conducted Integrated Human Practices (IHP) activities in these local areas.
How did we thoughtfully prepare for the lectures?
In terms of content and presentation, to ensure our cancer education was credible and authoritative, we not only referenced authoritative cancer data but also invited Professor Zhang Genfa, our Principal Investigator (PI), to participate as the main speaker for this series of educational events. Our educational content covered various aspects of cancer, including cancer incidence, trend analysis, genetic foundations, common diagnostic and treatment methods, and cancer prevention.
What we did to conduct our series activity?
After each session in the villages, we distributed custom-made masks, canvas bags, and cancer awareness booklets to all participating elderly individuals. We aimed to encourage them to continue paying attention to their health and prioritize cancer screening and prevention in their daily lives. We received unanimous praise and gratitude from village officials in several villages following our educational events.
Process:
Feedbacks and Recommendation:
Due to time constraints, our team was only able to visit three villages for our educational activities. However, we sincerely hope that cancer education can reach every household, not only among the elderly but also among residents of all age groups.
After all, health should always be the priority.
We also identified some common issues in the villages we visited:
⚫Language Barriers: In rural areas, where local dialects prevail, language barriers can impede effective communication during educational activities.
⚫Gender Differences: We observed a notable gender imbalance among our audience, with more women than men participating. This may be due to social factors and stereotypes. Understanding and addressing such disparities is essential for effective outreach.
⚫Lack of Health Education Resources: Our visits highlighted the scarcity of health education activities in rural areas, particularly regarding cancer awareness. This underscores the need for initiatives like ours to bridge the gap and bring vital health information to underserved communities.
We believe that these shared challenges can provide valuable insights and suggestions for future iGEM teams conducting educational outreach activities.

This science outreach allowed students to access new knowledge, stimulated their creativity and innovative thinking, and expanded their interest and curiosity about science. Some students marveled at the wonders of natural phenomena, while others were immersed in the joy of acquiring new knowledge. Some students even became more determined to pursue careers as scientists. Regardless of how, this science outreach planted a seed in the hearts of some students, and as they continue their educational journey, there will be a wonderful encounter with science.
Xu Zihong from Tibet Linzhi Gongbujiangda Primary School
Due to various objective factors, science courses are a rare experience for Tibetan children. Thanks to the project team for providing us with course materials and creative products. During the teaching process, by transforming complex scientific language into vivid language, the students had a completely new experience. Besides explaining some problems, I think the most meaningful aspect was making them realize that there are so many questions to explore, so many phenomena to study, and so many substances to create. When they received the small gifts, everyone was very happy. Besides the brief experience, the more important meaning lies in the fact that when they see certain things in the future, they will remember that particular science class.
