inclusivity

OUR IGEM TEAM 🕷

Our team strived to incorporate inclusive design principles throughout our project development process. As a diverse group of 16 students with majors in biotechnology and sericulture, including 13 girls and 3 boys, we recognized the importance of seeking broad perspectives.

During the early stages, we conducted surveys to gather input on our project idea from students across various other majors, not just the sciences. This allowed us to consider viewpoints from non-technical backgrounds as well. We also engaged groups of students in similar majors to get feedback from future users and domain experts.

Aim 1

Our project aims to enable mass production of spider silk for wide-ranging industrial applications. To ensure the end products are accessible to all, we are committed to open-source sharing of protocols and results. This will allow researchers and companies around the world to leverage our work.

Aim 2

We also aim to raise awareness about sustainable materials that can reduce reliance on less eco-friendly alternatives. Our integrated human practices plan includes outreaching to underserved communities to promote STEM education and discuss the implications of new biotechnologies.

Throughout the design process, we will continue emphasizing inclusion and diversity of perspectives. This will allow us to maximize the potential benefits of enhanced spider silk across geographic, economic, and social boundaries. We are dedicated to developing this technology responsibly and equitably for the advancement of all humankind.
