1.General Lab Safety

Wear gloves, mask, and lab coats

Wear closed-toe shoes

No eating, drinking or running in the Lab

Tie back long hair

Dispose of biological waste in designated bins

Conduct experiments with toxic/pungent gases in a fume hood

Clean up the lab before leaving

2.Experimental safety

2.1 Pipette

Do not hold the pipette horizontally when liquid is in tip to prevent backflow damage

Replace pipette tips in a timely manner

2.2 Refrigerated Centrifuge

 Pay attention to balancing tubes

Cover buckets to prevent tube movement

2.3 Tabletop Centrifuge

Clean machine after use to remove water and debris

Do not move during operation

2.4 Gel electrophoresis

Wearing gloves and mask since gels are toxic

3.Micro-organism safet

Seal media tubes and containers to prevent contamination

Disinfect benchtops after experiments

Disinfect waste containers and bins

We only engineered two strains, Escherichia coli DH5-α and BL21, which do no harm to human bodies.

We used Bacillus cereus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus as test bacteria and all related experiments were conducted inside the laboratory with BSL-2 facilities.

4.Ethics

Our experiments do not involve any human or animal tissues, cells, or genes. All genetic modifications are limited to research use only.
