As early as before the CCIC conference, we had established experimental technology cooperation with the Fudan University team. During the CCIC conference, the China iGEM team introduced their respective projects. After listening to the project introduction of Fudan University, we thought that the projects of the two teams were very suitable, so we had in-depth exchanges with them, and finally decided to carry out multi-dimensional cooperation as long-term collaborators.
We swapped plasmids early in the game. We lent the core plasmid NS3 recombinant vector to Fudan University, and took the team leader of Fudan University to visit our laboratory, exchange experience in cultivating cyanobacteria, and have in-depth exchanges on experimental safety and experimental experience.
At the Conference of iGEMer Community in China, both teams shared their projects, which led us to discover that the projects of the two teams had a lot in common and faced similar problems. After the meeting, we had a long discussion, and finally decided to strengthen cooperation in publicity, contributing to the popularization of synthetic biology together.
Publicity has always been a common concern between us and Fudan University. With the rapid development of the Internet, various online platforms have become the first window of publicity, and we and Fudan University have made great efforts in online publicity, creating publicity accounts on Weibo, Bilibili, INS and other popular platforms. But online campaigns often fail to reach young children. Children are a reflection of the future of society, and the next generation's views on synthetic biology will affect the future development of synthetic biology, and synthetic biology publicity for young children is necessary.
Considering the cognitive limitations of children, we hope to use a relaxed and lively publicity method to make children more acceptable, and Fudan University proposed the idea of making picture books.
From August to September, we finalized the content, style, and language of the picture book together, made the story line, created and revised the script, and created and modified the draft together, during which the National University of Defense Technology and Tongji University also participated in the production of the picture book.
After countless online meetings, countless story line versions, and countless drawing styles, our picture book is finally freshly baked!!!
Our picture books are based on the most basic knowledge of synthetic biology - genes and gene editing, turning obscure knowledge into light short stories, and made two editions in Chinese and English, hoping that children anywhere in the world can experience the interesting aspects of synthetic biology.
In addition, we also co-organized a high school student campus open day with Fudan University and Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool, aiming to stimulate high school students' love for synthetic biology and raise their awareness of the iGEM competition.
