Overview

Our project is focusing on data generation and model training.

Since we using computer and publicly accessible data, there is hardly safety issue on modeling side.

Thus, the only safety hazard is present in the wet lab space. Since we do not intend to bring our engineered E.coli outside lab containment, because they are built purely for data generation workflow development purpose; we follow strict safe laboratory practices to eliminate any risk to release the engineered organism.

Regulations and guidelines

The Singapore Ministry of Health (MOH) and National University of Singapore (NUS) guidelines provide clear instructions on biosafety and biosecurity practices, containment levels, risk assessment, and handling of hazardous substances. These guidelines serve as a framework for ensuring safe and responsible work with biological agents and GMOs. By following these rules and guidance, we can ensure that our project is conducted in a controlled and secure manner.

Quality laboratory space

We have access to well-equipped laboratory spaces that are designed and maintained to meet the required biosafety levels. These spaces are equipped with safety features such as biosafety cabinets, fume hoods and autoclaves for proper handling, containment and disposal of hazardous materials. The availability of appropriate equipment and dedicated laboratory spaces ensures that we can work safely and prevent accidental release of engineered E. coli or exposure to the hazardous agents/chemicals identified.

Laboratory training

As a team, we have received comprehensive training on biosafety and laboratory protocols. This training includes the principles of biosafety, risk assessment, containment practices, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, waste management and emergency procedures. Our training equips us with the necessary knowledge and skills to handle potential risks effectively and minimise any potential harm.

Supervision

Our experiment protocol are reviewed by our supervisors before we began experiments. All the experiments were conducted under the supervision of research fellows at the NUS Engineering Biology Lab who have worked with E. coli to ensure we are carrying our experiments safely.

Safe laboratory practices

In addition to the specific guidelines and regulations, we adhere to standard laboratory protocols and practices. This includes maintaining accurate documentation of experiments, ensuring proper labeling of materials, implementing good laboratory practices and conducting regular safety audits and inspections. These procedures and protocols help us maintain a high level of safety and reduce the likelihood of accidents.

Biohazard waste

Our project involves the handling and disposal of biological waste. We follow proper waste management procedures including the use of designated waste containers, autoclaving or chemical treatment as per the guidelines. These waste treatment/inactivation procedures ensure that any potentially hazardous biological material is properly inactivated and disposed of, minimising the risk of environmental contamination.
