The carbon emission from cement production of 1928-2018 largely increased, rising from nearly 0 to above 1500 million tons.

Between 1998-2017, earthquakes caused nearly 750 000 deaths globally, more than half of all deaths related to natural disasters.

Therefore, we resolutely decided to make changes to this condition through our iGEM project - Biostone.

Project Origin

Due to the story of the earthquake that struck Syria and Turkey in February, we started to develop the idea of a building material that could help.

On February 6th, 2023, citizens in south-central Turkey and north-western Syria were struck by a devastating earthquake in their sleep.

In the disaster, more than 56,000 people were killed, more than 2 million people were displaced,

and about 240,600 buildings were damaged, partially destroyed, or completely destroyed in Turkey and Syria.

Current Problem

We investigated the consequences and costs of such natural disasters.

Surprisingly, the enormous amount of concrete necessary for infrastructure rebuilding causes damage to the environment as cement production releases greenhouse gases.

The carbon emission from cement production of 1928-2018 largely increased. It rose from nearly 0 to above 1500 million tons.

Greenhouse gases then cause global warming which is harmful to the entire planet.

Our Solution

We resolutely decided to make changes to this condition. So, Team Keystone proposed a new solution: BioStone.

BioStone is a type of construction material made from cyanobacteria, hydrogel, and sand. It is entirely different from current ideas and utilizes original, clean
