On September 16, our team members, together with 20 students from our school joined 2023 CUHK iGEM Team and HK Joint School iGEM Team to co-organize a STEAM workshop for SKH Chu Oi Primary School (Lei Muk Shue). In this workshop, the concept of basic knowledge regarding DNA and synthetic biology were introduced via a number of activities and experiments. About 100 primary students were benefited from this activity. Such knowledge is fundamental yet crucial to primary school students, which would be able to inspire them in scientific discovery. On August 28, our iGEM team hosted an intra school summer workshop. The workshop aimed at arousing our school students’ interest in scientific research and biotechnology. Apart from introducing what iGEM is, fundamental knowledge and lab experience on synthetic biology were also provided to enrich our students’ horizon.
To introduce the use of DNA and synthetic biology, several intra school synthetic biology promotion activities were organized in September and October, including a couple of school sharing sessions, so as to increase the awareness of synthetic biology within our schoolmates. School is an important stage for us to demonstrate what we have done so far, as well as the increasing importance of synthetic biology in scientific research.
