Overview

To achieve the goal of “local people solve local problem”, our team have gone beyond the lab to communicate and promote our project in the society. Human practice makes it possible for our project to consider the direction of our project from a social impact perspective, expand our impact, and make progress in communication. Human practice is a road for us. With collaboration with other teams, public engagement education and integrated human practices, we have spread the wonder of synthetic biology and got the information that improved our project.

This year our team focus on developing a new therapy for treating the patients with the loss of GnRH secretion, we hope to create an engineered cell which can secret GnRH in a pulsatile fashion inside human body. We sincerely want to use science and love to give a helping to the rare disease groups.

This summer, we have interviewed patients with GnRH secretion disorders, the founder of the patient association, the professor in university, some students in high school. To know what kind of opinion the public would have towards our project, we held a debate competition, from which we have found a brand new direction of thinking about our project -- stigma. In order to get close to the real life of patients, we have interviewed the founder of the Kallman Patients’ Association in South China, through close contacts, it have noticed us the difficulties they are facing and the drawbacks of existing treatment options.

To make sure our experiments designed in wet lab are valid and learn the experience of publicity and activities from other teams, we had collaboration with different teams and schools to solve our problems and get new ideas and thoughts. Through communication we have expanded our horizon, got so many interesting and meaningful suggestions of our project.

What’ more, while promoting our projects, we have conveyed the concept of synthetic biology to more people. We went into schools and told the students the charming parts of biology knowledge. Aiming at improving education awareness and social responsibility, we captured the opportunity to cooperate with several volunteer teams and went to regions with relatively backward education to transmit the idea of synthetic biology.

Through human practices, we have thought deeply and expanded influence of our project, which may give a helping hand to the patients with rare diseases in the future.
