Overview

Glioblastoma - A Formidable Challenge

Glioblastoma, the most aggressive primary brain tumor within the glioma category, represents a formidable challenge in the field of oncology. Characterized by its low cure rates, high recurrence propensity, and infiltrative growth, this malignancy poses a significant threat to affected individuals. In the absence of effective chemotherapy, the median survival period for glioblastoma patients remains a mere 12.1 months. Presently, the therapeutic landscape for glioblastoma primarily relies on radiation and chemotherapy; however, treatment outcomes often fall short of expectations, with fewer than 10% of late-stage patients achieving a 5-year survival rate.

Poor Sleep Quality Among Glioblastoma Patients

An often-overlooked aspect of glioblastoma care is the compromised sleep quality experienced by patients. Extensive data have demonstrated the adverse impact of glioblastoma on the sleep patterns of affected individuals (Geng R.et al., 2018). The distressing symptoms associated with glioblastoma, coupled with the psychological toll of battling this aggressive cancer, significantly contribute to sleep disturbances that can lead to severe insomnia and diminished overall quality of life.

The Potential of Massage and Aromatherapy

Studies have explored alternative approaches to mitigate sleep disturbances in glioblastoma patients, shedding light on the potential benefits of massage therapy and aromatherapy. Research findings have indicated that these complementary interventions can enhance sleep quality (Lan.C et al., 2020). Massage, in particular, has demonstrated its efficacy in promoting relaxation, reducing pain perception, and improving overall sleep duration and quality in glioblastoma patients.

Innovative Sleep Aid - The Sleep Enhancement Helmet

In response to the pervasive issue of poor sleep quality among glioblastoma patients, we have conceived a groundbreaking solution: the Sleep Enhancement Helmet. This innovative device is designed to address the unique challenges faced by glioblastoma patients in achieving restorative sleep. By incorporating elements of massage therapy and aromatherapy, the helmet seeks to provide comfort and relaxation, alleviating the sleep-related distress commonly associated with this aggressive cancer. Our research and development efforts aim to improve the well-being and overall quality of life for glioblastoma patients by enhancing their sleep experiences. Through this pioneering approach, we aspire to offer a glimmer of hope and comfort to those confronting the formidable challenges posed by glioblastoma.

Design Thinking

Our Team's Design Thinking Journey

Design Thinking is a creative problem-solving approach that we, as a team, wholeheartedly embrace. It consists of several integral phases:

Ideate:

As a team, we gather to brainstorm and ideate. We begin by immersing ourselves in the world of glioblastoma patients, understanding their struggles and challenges. We conduct interviews, read medical journals, and engage with patients to gain empathy.

We encourage wild and unconventional ideas, thinking beyond the boundaries. For instance, during our ideation sessions for the Sleep Enhancement Helmet, we considered various features, such as customizable comfort settings, soothing sounds, and even incorporating aromatherapy for relaxation.

Prototype:

Once we have a pool of ideas, we dive into the prototyping phase. Our team of engineers and designers collaboratively work to create tangible representations of our concepts. For the Sleep Enhancement Helmet, we craft physical prototypes that include adjustable headgear, soft cushioning, and integrated speakers for sound therapy.

Test:

Testing is a pivotal step where we involve glioblastoma patients in the process. We want to ensure that our solutions resonate with their needs. Patients try out the helmet prototypes, providing valuable feedback on comfort, effectiveness in improving sleep quality, and ease of use.

We also incorporate data from sleep studies and medical research to validate the helmet's impact on sleep patterns. This scientific approach helps us refine the design further.

Implement:

Upon successful testing and refinement, our team moves forward with the implementation phase. We collaborate with manufacturers to mass-produce the Sleep Enhancement Helmet. Simultaneously, we partner with healthcare facilities to offer the helmet as an option to glioblastoma patients.

We create comprehensive user guides and instructional materials, ensuring that patients and caregivers can easily understand and utilize the helmet. Our team also conducts workshops to educate healthcare providers on its benefits.
