Jiameng Xiong

MBTI:enfp & infp

Hi there! I'm Xiong Jiameng, an 11th-grade student from Changsha Changjun International School! I can freely switch between ENFP and INFP in the MBTI, and my zodiac sign is Gemini. I'm a bit reserved in nature, but I enjoy getting to know a variety of different people. I'm an optimistic and cheerful person who can accept my own shortcomings and embrace constructive criticism from others. I excel in tasks related to copywriting. Last year, I participated in CTB and took on the role of team leader. Through this experience, I developed my teamwork and leadership skills. At school, I'm a member of the media club, writing articles for the public platform. I'm particularly fond of video production and marketing, and I hope to have the opportunity to study media at USC! Regarding the iGEM competition, to be honest, I'm not naturally inclined towards biology. The combination of my not-so-great English and my average biology skills was quite a challenge! Nevertheless, I mustered the courage to participate in this competition. Firstly, during the process, I met friends with whom I had great compatibility in terms of personality. Most importantly, this competition made me realize a different side of "biology." Flipping through a biology textbook, the memorization-heavy knowledge is marked with various colors of highlighters, and images of different microorganisms are scattered throughout. This initially gave me the impression that biology was dull and monotonous. However, in the iGEM competition, each team member brainstormed for our project, and through our continuous discussions, I gradually became aware that the benefits that biology can bring to society are beyond imagination! For our research on fertilizers, we discovered that they can to some extent change the environmental conditions that we currently prioritize, improve environmental quality, and reduce pollution. Biology doesn't merely represent life; it's also a coordinator that helps organisms adapt to their environment!

Youheng Wu

MBTI:ISFJ

I am Wu Youheng, a student from Tsinglan School. My MBTI is ISFJ, and my zodiac sign is Capricorn. I tend to be introverted, but I am warm-hearted beneath my reserved exterior. I yearn for collaboration and interaction with others, although I can be passive. I'm not particularly talkative on a regular basis, but when I do speak, I am straightforward. I have some social anxiety, but I am serious when it comes to tasks. I am kind-hearted and enjoy helping others, offering gentle advice and constructive criticism. I am also able to manage my emotions. In the future, I aim to pursue a major in economics or business. Currently, my dream schools are NYU, Rice University, and UPenn. I am not considering applying to UCS, as they are public schools. I possess strengths in the fields of economics and computer science. iGEM is not merely a biology competition; it is a comprehensive test for participants. Even though I haven't extensively studied biology, I hope to contribute to the team in other areas utilizing my personal strengths. I participated in the 2022 NEC National Economics Challenge and ranked within the top 30% in the Chinese competition. I achieved perfect scores in both AP Economics courses, and my AP Computer Science Principles score was not only perfect, but it also received certification from the College Board. I have previous experience with Python and am currently learning Java and HTML. I am capable in programming and also familiar with other software like MIT App Inventor. While I'm uncertain if these skills will be directly applicable, they are some of my strengths. I don't have strong opinions in biology science, since I haven't studied biology extensively. I personally view learning biology similarly to learning other subjects - it's about making contributions to society. For instance, the seaweed gel we are researching is a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide extracted from brown algae, which can be added to health foods and used as a biological fertilizer. Our degradation method differs from traditional methods; it's environmentally friendly, safe, and easily achievable. I chose to participate in iGEM because I initially wanted to study sports science. Since I haven't studied much biology at school, I believe this competition will provide an opportunity for me to learn more about the subject. After all, there is some connection between sports science, physics, and biology.

I focus on understanding others and providing assistance while improving efficiency. I do my best to fulfill my responsibilities and continually strive to enhance my efficiency to ensure that tasks are completed. Biology is one of my favorite subjects. I began studying IGCSE Science in high school and chose the IB Biology Higher Level (HL) course in my junior year. Although it can be challenging at times, I find it enjoyable. My favorite subjects are economics and business management, followed by studying the structure and functions of human cells. When I discovered that an activity could cover both of these areas, I felt excited. This is why I chose to participate in IGEM! Through IGEM, I can develop my expertise, lay a solid foundation for the future, and contribute to society and the market by developing new products. It's a win-win situation!
