Team

Meet The 2023 iGEM Sheffield Team!

Team Leads

Eromu Ehwerhemuepha

Eromu is the software and hardware team lead and is currently studying MEng Bioengineering. As a bioengineer, she is very eager to learn about and work with medical devices. As part of the Women in Engineering Society Committee, she is also a big advocate for the encouragement of young women in STEM. "I am excited to see the future sythetic biology will bring and know that I played a small part in it!"

Mario Javier Garcia Duarte

Mario is a co-biology team lead and is studying MEng Bioengineering. He is a curious second year, eager to better his understanding of the exciting field of synthetic biology, and eventually, push its boundaries.
"I'm thrilled to begin my iGEM journey with other passionate scientists in a project that combines three things I love: technology, genetics, and making things!"

Katie Oxley

Katie is a co-biology team lead, and is in her third year of BSc Microbiology and Genetics. She is currently interested in bacterial genetics;
"I love understanding the interconnecting pathways, and how complicated even tiny life is. I remain decisively indecisive about which research areas I would like to pursue, as I find everything exciting to learn about. She is passionate about providing a safe space for LGBTQ+ people and Women in STEM.

Berardo Manuel Sanchez Tafolla

Berardo is studying a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, and is one of this year's team leads for the Biology sub-team.
Automation in biology is a growing and promising, but challenging research field. My contribution to this year's iGEM Sheffield project is motivated by the development of versatile and open-source devices capable of solving any biological issue in an efficient and affordable way. I'm very excited to join efforts with fellow colleagues to find solutions to increasingly complex questions, and open the gates to potential useful applications

Agnes Chan

Agnes is currently studying Biology BSc, and is this year's media and outreach team lead. She is excited to have gained the chance to better understand the world of synthetic biology. Agnes has a strong interest in science communication, and hopes to make science accessible to everyone.
"I also hope that through working with iGEM Sheffield I gets to take part in more outreach events and meet like-minded people along the way!"

Jack Davies

Jack is our logistics lead this year, and is currently reading BSc Biology. He is a first-year biologist, with a particular interest in plants, fungi, and climate science. Project management and coordination have always been an interest of his, from organising gigs when he was at school, to his previous administrative job within the NHS.
"I'm looking forward to learning more about biotechnology and synthetic biology, and am excited to be able to contribute to actual, cutting-edge science, even if I'm just managing the money. After all, someone has to do it!"

Dirc-Robert Wortley

Dirc is this year's team lead for system modelling and simulation, and hardware system design and engineering. He is currently studying MEng Mechatronic and Robotic Engineering.
"iGEM embodies interdisciplinary thinking and collaboration, granting me invaluable experience researching and designing solutions at the intersection of science and engineering. With a passion for automatic control systems in scientific research - both Earth-bound and space-bound, I am excited to contribute to unlocking knowledge and capabilities in synthetic biology.”

Advisors

Marcus Young

As a psychologist-turned-geneticist, Marcus has found a passion in synthetic biology with industrial applications. He has learned a lot in this field through iGEM last year, and can't wait to help the new Sheffield team take the project even further! Outside of the this, he enjoys learning languages (langsam aber sicher), as well as going to gigs, baking, and drawing.
"Can't wait to see you all at the jamboree!"

Isaac White

"I enjoy describing myself as both a biological and musical sythesist - when I am not in the lab tinkering with genes, you can probably find me tinking with synthesisers and drum machines, making my own music. I'm stoked to get the chance of contributing to iGEM again this year, as well as helping newcomers navigate this exciting, but tough, field"

Brooks Rady

"As a programming nerd who got a bit bored with just bits and bytes, I've decided to take on the challenge of reprogramming cells instead! I've been something of a barnacle on the hull of iGEM Sheffield since 2017, but have finally graduated from a team member to an advisor this year, letting a new generation of students take the reigns whilst doing my best to help them along the way!"
