Overview
The iGEM safety guidelines were strictly adhered to throughout the execution of the project. All organisms used to develop the products are kept in the laboratory while the experiments are performed. To ensure the safety of our devices for future external use, we prevent any accidental release of biological material into the environment.
Laboratory Safety
Laboratory Safety Training
Before entering the laboratory, all members of our team completed the "Laboratory safety and health," "Biosafety and Bioconservation Education and Training," and "Laboratory Hazard Information" courses, and obtained the relevant certificates from NYCU. Additionally, the NYCU laboratory management system conducted comprehensive assessments of all experiments to ensure the safety of all procedures.
Level and Rule of the Laboratory
Our experiments are conducted in a BSL1 level laboratory. In addition, during laboratory experiments, our instructors provide guidance on the proper operation of equipment and the proper disposal of laboratory waste. All equipments used to handle and contain Escherichia coli (E. coli) is properly sterilized, including alcohol and bleach. In addition, we use a sterilizing kettle for sterilization to prevent any potential bacterial leakage or contamination during the experiment. We also ensured compliance with Taiwan's biosafety laws.
Safety of Our Product
Our product CoPlat contains E. coli to ensure continuous production of adhesive proteins. Therefore, with regard to product safety, we will focus primarily on managing this within the laboratory. Should there be a need to expand to other areas in the future, we will provide clear labeling and warnings to guide proper use and clearly indicate that CoPlat is suitable for laboratory or professional applications.
