Pass through the stomach acid
Pass through the stomach acid
Once the yogurt is swallowed, the first hurdle our
Gut-sweepers face is getting through stomach acid.
Stomach acid is a highly acidic environment that may
kill almost all bacteria; our engineered bacteria are no
exception. So, getting Gut-sweepers through stomach
acid is the first problem we must solve.
When you drink our
yogurt you can feel its "gran
-
ular" texture, and don't be
surprised, it's a protective
cover made for our
Gut-sweepers.
Not only does this protective cover made of edible
ingredients provide Gut-sweepers with a shield
against stomach acid, but the protein components
also serve as food for them on the road. When they
safely arrive at the intestine, they're still full of energy
and ready to go. During the journey, the protective
cover will gradually dissolve and the bacteria will
move forward with the chyme bit by bit.

Sense the butyrate
Sense the butyrate
When they reach the large intestine, their work begins. In the
large intestine of a healthy individual, the butyrate concentration
will remain at a stable level, but if he gets constipated, its concen
-
tration will decrease. Our Gut-sweepers can sweep and collect the
butyrate to sense its concentration. If the concentration of butyrate
in the gut is much lower than normal, it means that constipation has
occurred in the body. Our Gut-sweepers will initiate follow-up pro
-
cedures to improve this situation.

After sensing the low levels of butyrate in
the large intestine, Gut-sweepers turn on their
genetic circuit to continuously express TPH and
TDC, two enzymes that utilize tryptophan to cat
-
alyze the production of serotonin (aka 5-HT) and
release it out of the bacteria and into the intesti

nal lumen.

Secrete the serotonin

ways that eventually lead to increased intestinal
peristalsis and secretion, which allows for the
smooth removal of stool that has accumulated in
the gut for a long time, and our Gut-sweepers have
finally done their job.
