Safety

We attended safety training sessions organized by Zhejiang University and followed the Zhejiang University Laboratory Safety Management Measures and the Zhejiang University Laboratory Safety Manual. Only individuals who have passed the laboratory safety test are permitted to enter the laboratory. Any activities or items within the laboratory are directly related to the ongoing experiments.

General lab safety rules

1.      Wear disposable gloves.

2.      Always wear the lab coat properly.

3.      Waste liquids should be disposed of in waste tanks.

4.      Do not eat or drink in the lab.

5.      Do not do anything unrelated to the experiments in the lab.

6.      Smoking is not allowed in the entire laboratory area.

7.     Taking samples out of the lab is strictly forbidden.

8.      Unrelated personnel should not enter the lab without the permission of the lab manager.

9.      Be familiar withthe escape route in case of emergency.

10.  Be familiar withthe location of the first aid kit, fire extinguishing equipment, eye washing, and shower.

11.  Wash hands before leaving the lab.

12.  Do not wear the labcoat or gloves to public places such as restaurants, libraries, conference rooms, and offices.

13.  Keep the lab roomclean and tidy.

14.  Consult the labmanager or instructor for any questions during the experiment. Do not operateblindly.

Centrifuge safety rules

1.      Centrifuge must bebalanced.

2.      When starting the centrifuge, wait until it reaches the set speed.

3.      Stop immediately if the machine makes any noise.

4.      No students are allowed to use the large centrifuge without the instructor’s supervision.

Yeast safety rules

Although considered safe for humans, the baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae)is a spore-forming fungus that can spread easily. Therefore, we take special measures to prevent spore leakage.

1.     Seal all the yeast containers with Parafilm.

2.     Keep the containers in an incubator.

3.     Only open the containers in biosafety cabinets.

4.     After use, the disposables including gloves, pipette tips, Petri dishes, and microcentrifuge tubes have to undergo autoclave before disposal.

5.     Turn on UV lamps in the biosafety cabinets for at least 40 minutes after use.
