Visually Impaired Individuals - Vermilion

This section represents our efforts to make synthetic biology and science accessible to the visually Impaired Individuals. We have organized the following activities:

Braille Popular Science:

Description: We translate easy-to-understand popular science articles into Braille, allowing the visually impaired to gain a simple yet detailed understanding of synthetic biology. Our aim is to spark their interest in synthetic biology and provide further opportunities for them to learn more. We are committed to igniting their interest in learning synthetic biology and deepening their understanding of the subject.

More: Visually impaired individuals often face challenges in developing an interest in synthetic biology or science and engaging in self-learning. Finding suitable synthetic biology textbooks is relatively difficult for them, as mainstream blind education does not typically cover synthetic biology. Below are some of our popular science articles in Braille:

Through their study of synthetic biology, they have developed a certain level of interest in the field, showing curiosity and a desire to explore it further. We consider this a promising start and an opportunity for the visually impaired to gain insights into synthetic biology. We recommended our previously recorded audio materials available on Himalaya, which provide an introduction to synthetic biology and share our team's story. This is intended to help them deepen their understanding of synthetic biology.

Monthly Magazine and Skincare Manual

We have previously created monthly publications that compile significant national and international events related to synthetic biology, making it easier for people to stay updated on advancements in the field. For our visually impaired friends interested in understanding more about synthetic biology, we have specially produced audio versions of these monthly publications and skincare guides. This allows visually impaired individuals who wish to gain a deeper understanding of synthetic biology to promptly access updates in the field, helping them determine their learning and research directions.

Music

In consideration of the unique needs of visually impaired individuals, we have scoured various platforms to find a wide array of audio content that piques their interest. As widely known, music can subliminally impart knowledge and ideas to people. Among the audio files we've gathered, there are naturally soothing tunes sourced from the biological world, which help reduce stress and promote better sleep. There are also highly catchy songs with lyrics adapted to focus on biological knowledge. Through their energetic rhythms and familiar melodies, these songs make learning biology more engaging, making them particularly suitable for visually impaired individuals.

Mock Courtroom

To improve students' scientific and legal literacy, we organized a mock courtroom event. Students assumed roles such as the plaintiff, plaintiff's lawyer, defendant, and defendant's lawyer to simulate a trial regarding the question of "whether Propionibacterium acnes, a common skin bacterium, is the sole bacterium responsible for causing acne or if there are other microorganisms present." This exercise aimed to elevate participants' knowledge in microbiology, immunology, dermatology, and other related fields, while also honing their legal practice skills.

CCiC Debate Competition:

At this year's CCiC conference, we organized a debate competition focused on two main topics: "Should humans revive extinct species under technically feasible conditions?" and "Are the ethical requirements for animal experimentation in China adequately addressed by the 3R principle alone?" As researchers in the new era of synthetic biology, we must take responsibility for contemplating and predicting the potential consequences of synthetic biology technology.

Synthetic biology technology always deals with the creation of things that didn't previously exist. "While researchers may only be designing their own experiments, they might provide foundational concepts for the design of artifacts or processes with harmful outcomes." Researchers, as creators of new products and methods, are ethically responsible for their actions. They must not only bear the responsibility for scientific research but also take on a societal responsibility.

the old - Orange

This section represents our efforts to make synthetic biology and science accessible to the old.

We have chosen an innovative approach to combine biology with poetry and prose. Through various activities, we have collected creative works from participants, including the elderly. Chinese seniors often have a deeper understanding and appreciation of poetry and literature. During these discussions, we not only educated them about synthetic biology through the poetry and prose but also gained insights from the elderly about their perspectives on the field. Together, we delved into the mysteries of synthetic biology.

Here are some of the collected works:

Poem 1: You yearn to replicate and change, But you are pulled further by the spindle fiber. Looking back, you can never return to the past.

Poem 2: I offered everything to the lysosome, Only to find it was a sacrifice to love. The ripples in its heart disappeared suddenly.

Poem 3: I offered everything to the lysosome, And its heart only had a slight ripple, Leaving no trace.

Poem 4: DNA and RNA, We share the same origin. We are so similar, Yet we only meet in conflict.

Poem 5: Sedum, My body is tough and leathery, But my inner self is soft and delicate. I only wish to release my breath at night.

Poem 6: E. coli, They often curse me as a pathogen, Yet they continuously beat and modify my body. Oh, humanity, what am I?

Poem 7: Encounter acidity pH test paper, Encounter new gene sequences, Encounter another possibility for the future.

Poem 8: Nature dances wonderfully, Life's chain is unbreakable. The power of evolution is boundless.

Poem 9: Ecosystem, life blooms, Species depend on each other, writing a new chapter. Natural balance is well guarded.

Poem 10: Everything grows with a natural rhythm, Deep in the forest, the Zen-like atmosphere is rich. The beauty of biology is like a painting.

Poem 11: We are both in the small nucleus, You are a directional polymer, I am the monomer you guide for synthesis.

We printed these three-line poems on paper and engaged in discussions with the elderly, exploring the mysteries of biology together.
