Overview
Background
Population aging is a severe crisis in the contemporary Chinese society. Research shows that by 2100, the proportion of China's elderly population will rise continually. the proportion of the elderly population will also continue to increase.
Figure 1 From 2010 to2050 The proportion of the elderly populations with indicated ages in China among all age groups [1]
With global aging trends, age-related neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease (AD) are rising sharply. Cognitive impairment caused by neurodegenerative diseases has become one of the important factors that endanger the health of the elderly
Figure 2 The Percentage of of Chinese Elderly with Cognitive Impairment in (N=4643) [2]
There is no cure for AD yet. Mainstream research targets Aβ and tau protein phosphorylation, but current treatment options are limited and not very effective. We were inspired to identify new AD therapies to support the elderly population.
Survey
Through a small-scale survey, we found that over 50% of families were composed mainly with elderly members (aged more than 65 years). We also conducted inclusive surveys of "old drifters," elderly who relocated to cities with their children. They face isolation and fear of burdening families if developing AD.

Out Practice
- Education
- Inclusive Practice
- Advancement
We are raising social awareness by teaching key information about the causes, preventions, and treatments of AD. This knowledge can help destigmatize the disease and empower families to support their elderly members.
Figure 4 Leaflet (translated version)
By directly surveying "old drifter" communities, we ensured our solution addresses their needs. We will continue involving them in research to develop appropriate and accessible treatments.
Figure 5 Field interview with "old drifters" in Chongwen community
Although our attempted solution did not significantly improve tauopathies, our innovative genetic model provides foundations for future research. We proposed improvements may inspire other scientists to develop novel AD treatments. In an aging world with growing dependence and dementia, we aim to combine education, inclusive practice, and scientific advancement to make a positive impact on society.
