Education
Overview
Our team has been committed to enabling more people to understand the emerging discipline of synthetic biology and has made considerable efforts to
do so.
Past: For high school students
We have been devoted to promoting synthetic biology among high school students. Our team's PI has offered courses related to biochemistry, and we have borrowed this classroom to carry out synthetic biology-related content and popularize the project with our classmates. Our PI has led many IGEM teams over the years to achieve excellent results. Since 2015, 32 students have won silver medals in IGEM. Students have gained a lot in terms of academic performance and abilities.

The "Chemistry and Society" written by our PI includes materials used in biosynthesis and knowledge related to chemistry. We will also compile a book as an independent material on biosynthesis to discuss and learn these contents in greater depth.

Present: For the elderlies - “Old drifts”
As the aging problem becomes increasingly severe in China, the population of "old drifts" is also gradually increasing. "Old drifts" refer to the elderly group who move into cities with their children. They leave the society of acquaintances who have lived for decades and enter unfamiliar urban communities, facing difficulties such as broken social networks, low participation in community activities, discomfort in cultural life, tense family relationships, and lack of welfare. At the same time, they usually do not know much about medical diseases and other aspects. Most of them do not have their household registration moved with them and do not participate in medical insurance locally. However, the proportion of rural insurance reimbursement in other places is relatively low, so they are afraid of going to hospitals, worrying that having their children accompany them for medical treatment will delay their work, which often leads to more severe illness.
To this end, we conducted in-depth community research to understand the current situation of the "old drifts," and provided lectures to elderly people from Chongwen Community, Linping District, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, to help them understand the content related to elderly diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. We aim to popularize synthetic biology for the elderly and hope to solve problems such as Alzheimer's disease through synthetic biology methods.

Future: Girls' Learning Camp
We are currently working on a project related to women's study camps. Although women's status has improved in today's society, they are still limited by stereotypes in various fields. Many people believe that women are lack of scientific thinking and cannot learn STEM well. We have created the Mutter Learning Camp, hoping to break these stereotypes through education. We plan to offer courses on synthetic biology, and the course outline has been completed.
