"Synbio-rainbow"
—— Teaching and Painting Activities in Educational Institutions for Disabled Children

Purpose

   There are a large number of people with Down's syndrome, which is a normal illness that happens all the time. Also autistic children often show symptoms such as repetitive stereotyped movements and lack of interest in connecting with others and even family members.
   Drawing is a productive and effective way of expressing emotions and is considered one of the most important forms of therapy. So we brought some of the paper we designed and taught them to fill in the blanks with our art oil pastels. After several months of experiments, we extracted some from turmeric.
   We want to be impaired in hearing and intelligence.Our children bring our colors, so that curcumin pigments can not only be used for entertainment, but also help special groups.

Process

   On October 7, the HP team members started the meeting and called the special education centers one by one, hoping to bring color and happiness to the children through the "Star Picture Book" activity. After two hours of hard contact, we got in touch with Principal Feng of Qihang Special Education Center.
   President Feng said that he was glad that we had such an activity and was willing to cooperate with us to the fullest extent. After several days of close contact, we finalized the formal time and form of activities, and selected five team members to participate in the activities.

   On the afternoon of October 10, five members of the team wore uniforms and took our "mascot", the E. coli Little Painter, to the Qihang Special Education Center.
At the door, Mrs.Feng greeted us warmly. We took out the picture books we prepared, and Mrs.Feng distributed the picture books according to the specific situation of the children.

   The team members were in charge of one small class and got two pics, a total of 30, which were randomly assigned to the children; other team members in charge of the larger one each got three different pictures, a total of 45. Then Mrs.Feng took us into the elevator, and every student entered their classroom. There were two teachers in uniform clothes who assisted our team members in their work.

   First of all, the team members took out the pictures as examples and explained them to the children. After a brief explanation, with the help of the teacher, the team members taught the children to color one by one.

   At the end of the activity, a member of the team quietly went to put on a doll suit to surprise the children! The kids loved it and were so happy to see it that they couldn't wait to hold hands, hug and interact with it.

   Teachers said that the children are very happy today, like this activity very much, and thank us for coming here to carry out the "Star Picture Book" activity, so that they feel that these children have not been neglect.
   After that, we took pictures with the teachers.

Gain

   By making picture books for children to color, children not only experience the fun of color, but also have some knowledge and contact with the embryonic form of biosynthesis.
   The stigmatization of mental illness always makes those people more miserable and ashamed. Fortunately, with the passage of time, there is not as much prejudice and questioning of people with mental illness as there once was. Through this meaningful lesson, we show children a rich and colorful life and possibilities. Anyway, we hope that the children will enjoy this time and learn something.

Synbio-chess game——Production of "Biosynthetic Journey"

Purpose

In order to expand the influence of synthetic biology and promote the concept of synthetic biology into primary and secondary school students and even kindergarten children, the GXU-China team imitated the popular chess and card game, Monopoly, and produced a synthetic biology version of Monopoly game. We have innovatively produced the "Brave Challenge "mode, which implants the concept of synthetic biology into students' hearts through tense questions and pleasant games, so that they can feel the fun of synthetic biology.

Realization

1. Buy the original Monopoly
First of all, we bought the original Monopoly board game, and we studied all the game components, maps, bank money, house ornaments, challenge and opportunity cards, real estate certificates, character logos, instructions and so on.
2. Look for alternatives
Secondly, we look for alternatives to the components in the game.
At first, we carefully studied the map composition, which included several sections, real estate, bonuses, taxes and so on. We want to find the gene of the corresponding length and use its gene length to set the price , but in order to maintain the normal structure of the whole map and make the game run normally, we first use the price of each piece of real estate in the map, and then find the corresponding gene length. However, due to limited capacity, and for the sake of simple and good-looking maps, we finally abandoned this version of the program.
Then, for the challenge and opportunity cards, we studied the challenge and opportunity cards in the original map, and found that there are penalties and bonuses, and in different contexts, we think about the background, think about the rewards, and finally come to the conclusion.
At the same time, for the challenge card, we have adopted the "Brave Challenge"mode. Players can pay any amount to the bank as a "brave deposit"(up to 2000 yuan), and then draw a challenge card from the challenge card pile to answer the question. If the challenge is successful, they can get three times the reward of the deposit. If the challenge fails, the bank has the deposit and will not return it.
3. The final result
After two days of intensive discussion, we came to the final plan.

Map

We replace the common real estate on the map with different genes(or enzymes).
The "Power Company"on the map is replaced by "Patent Office". Players who want to buy it must propose a project full of innovative thinking to our referee team, which can be approved by the referee.
The two "airports" on the map are replaced by "biotechnology companies", which players can name themselves after purchasing.
The final map is as follows.

Money

We use the original denominations of 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000. The pattern on the money is designed by ourselves,which is based on our topic this year, and the artistic image designed is "Little Painter of Escherichia coli". The final money is as follows.

Challenge and opportunity cards

For the opportunity cards, we used the original penalty and reward mechanics, but changed the background.
For example, "investing in the frontier technology of synthetic biology successfully", "going abroad to study biological knowledge to pay tuition fees", "experimental operation errors causing fires, spending money to repair experimental facilities" and so on, are more in line with the background of synthetic biology.

For the challenge card, we set up the "Brave Deposit" play. The general title is as follows.

Instructions

We wrote our own instructions for the "Synthetic Biology Tour," as follows.

Finally, we went to various print shops to find the right materials, and through three hours of tailoring by the team members, we finally made five complete "Synthetic Biology Tour" Monopoly game boards!

Dialogue

After the completion of the "Synthetic Biology Tour" Monopoly game board, we immediately gathered the team members to try it out. During the process, everyone expressed their opinions and actively participated in the game. The atmosphere of the game was very strong.

Synbio-carnival——the "Micro Artists"
-Synthetic Biology Garden Fair

Purpose

The purpose of "Micro Artists"-Synthetic Biology Garden Fair is to promote the IGEM competition and the entry of our Guangxi University team GXU-China in 2023-natural plant pigment curcumin as oil paint. On October 8, our team held a synthetic biology garden party called "Micro Artists" at 106 College of Life Science and Technology, Guangxi University.

Realization

1.Preparation
In order to ensure the smooth progress of the activity, we will hold a Plenary meeting on September 28 to ensure that all team members have their own tasks and ensure the smooth progress of the activity. In the course of the meeting, we first decided the time of the formal activity-the night of October 8, according to the schedule of the team members.
The team leader gave us a general introduction to the whole process of the activity. First, the PPT presentation was conducted. The main purpose was to publicize the iGEM competition, the concept of synthetic biology, the GXU-China 2023 team and the project theme. Secondly, the garden party will begin.
The activity is mainly divided into four sections——synthetic biology monopoly game, water painting, graffiti picture book and questionnaire and consultation desk. The team leader will divide the team carefully, each person has his own responsible plate, and each group has its own corresponding tasks.

2. Process
After the further discussion of the HP team members, we determined the rules of the whole garden party to make the garden party more interesting and attractive.
We introduce the game scheme of the lottery.
First of all, after listening to the lecture, the students can go to the front information desk to get a small book, and then the players can get a seal from the staff of the site after experiencing different activities at each site; they can also get a seal when taking a photo with our "mascot". When more than three seals have been collected, a lucky draw can be held at the information desk.
We have prepared three prize pools, which are arranged as follows:
Three seals-small prize pool (only small prizes)
Four seals-winning prize pool (with small prizes and winning prizes)
Five Seals-Grand Prize Pool (with winnings and prizes)
Prizes are divided into large, medium and small three grades of prizes, and we have carefully divided and selected the types of prizes and the number of prizes. The final scheme is as follows:
Grand Prize: 2 tablets, 3 USB disks, 4 dolls.
Winning: 10 notebooks, 5 canvas bags, 6 mouse pads.
Small prize: 30 key chains, several postcards.
Subsequently, HP team members divided their work and purchased the second batch of peripheral and related items, such as banners, water rubbing plates, hard oil painting sticks, etc.

3."Micro Artists"-Synthetic Biology Garden Fair
On October 8, 2023, the "Micro Artist" Synthetic Biology Fair officially began. The students entered the classroom according to the sign at the entrance of the College of Life Science and Technology, and we started the PPT lecture. The main purpose is to publicize the iGEM competition and lay a good foundation for the next recruitment. At the same time, we also introduced the projects and achievements of the GXU-China team in 2021 and 2022. Finally, we highlighted the project theme of the GXU-China team this year. The students at the activity site listened very carefully.

After the PPT presentation, we started the Q and A session, encouraging everyone to actively ask questions. The atmosphere at the event was strong, and everyone actively raised their own questions, and the relevant group members patiently answered them.
After that, we officially started the garden party.
It can be seen that there are many people queuing in front of each location, and every student has a good time.
