Innovative educational tools and outreach activities have the ability to establish a two-way dialogue with new communities by discussing public values and the science behind synthetic biology.
In September 2023, the Australian National University's (ANU) iGEM Team organized the first in-person showcase of the Australasian SynBio Challenge. This event was made possible through our team's dedication and innovation, opening up new opportunities to shape the field of synthetic biology and promote community engagement.
To make the event accessible to all, the ANU iGEM Team raised over $15,000 AUD to cover the travel costs of participating teams. This financial commitment ensured that teams from across Australasia could come together at ANU, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.
Our team recognized the importance of broadening the reach of synthetic biology and engaging new communities. We achieved this by hosting the final showcase that facilitated a two-way dialogue with the public. These interactions delved into not just the science behind synthetic biology but also its ethical and societal implications, allowing individuals from diverse backgrounds to have a say in shaping the field's future.
Our efforts in organizing the Australasian SynBio Challenge showcase demonstrate our commitment to advancing synthetic biology in an open, inclusive manner that focuses on public values. We take pride in our role in fostering dialogue, shaping the SynBio ecosystem in Austalia, and leaving a lasting impact on the realm of synthetic biology.
