People with Bipolar experience episodes of mania and depression with varying intensity. The mood swings affect the person in everyday life with symptoms like troubles sleeping, anxiety, and missing impulse control. People with bipolar have an increased risk of suicide.[2] Available therapy options include therapy, reduction of stress and medication.
The lihium compounds act as mood stabilizers. The therapy has shown high efficiency, particularly in preventing suicides.[3]
But due to the risk of lithium intoxication, regular monitoring of lithium levels in the blood is necessary. This involves regular doctor visits, weekly in the first four weeks of therapy.[4]
At the moment, no at-home test system for monitoring of the lithium levels is available.
With our project, we aim to develop an at-home testing system that will enable patients with Bipolar undergoing lithium therapy to independently monitor their lithium levels.
