Overview

Our project SCI focuses on enhancing the ability of attenuated Salmonella to colonize and invade the body and using a new, safer, and more efficient arabinose-delayed cleavage system to eliminate colorectal cancer. Our ultimate goal is to apply this system to treating and preventing digestive system cancers. Therefore, during project design, we considered the impact of bacterial dispersion into the social environment and employed an arabinose-delayed lysis system for attenuated Salmonella.

Relevant studies have shown that when used as a vaccine carrier, the amount of Salmonella detected in the water is extremely low, meeting experimental safety requirements. In addition, we demonstrate the safety and reliability of the JLU-NBBMS team project regarding experimenter safety, laboratory safety, personal privacy security, and other aspects.

Laboratory Safety

Overview

When conducting synthetic biology experimental projects, we must pay attention to safety issues at every step. Our team always regards biosafety as a prerequisite for the smooth conduct of all experiments and contributions to human society. Therefore, we are committed to taking all necessary precautions to avoid harm to our members and other living things in nature.

Safety Regulations

All our experiments were conducted in the key laboratory of pathophysiology at Jilin University. And follow Jilin University Undergraduate Experiment Code and Jilin University Laboratory Safety Inspection Regulations.

All team members have completed laboratory safety education under the leadership of Professor Sun Wei, making the members qualified to conduct wet experiments. Under the guidance of teachers from the National Experimental Teaching Center for Basic Medicine of Jilin University, further inspections of experimental safety were conducted so that our laboratory and experimental personnel have the conditions and capabilities to conduct experiments.

Safety Education

We used multiple methods to conduct biosafety training. First, we visited the pathophysiology laboratory of Jilin University School of Basic Medicine under the leadership of Professor Sun Wei and PI Zhang Ling; we also conducted biosafety training in the classroom and conducted hands-on activities simultaneously.

The operational assessment gave us a deeper understanding of the dangers posed by related biosafety hazards, leaving the principle of "biosafety always first" in our members' minds.

Safety Protocol Agreement

Before participating in the wet experiment, all members have signed the Jilin University Undergraduate Experiment Code to express their commitment to laboratory biosafety and their responsibility for their own actions in the laboratory.

Daily Management

Experimental operation details and experimental operation safety signs are posted and plastic-sealed next to the experimental instruments for experimental personnel, always reminding laboratory personnel of the precautions for using various instruments.

At the same time, we have a special experimental instrument usage registration form for each special instrument. After each use, we are required to write and clearly indicate the purpose of the experiment on time and implement the experimental responsibilities. This is important for the traceability of our overall experimental process and experimental engineering. The evolution of design played a key role.

At the same time, every group meeting will emphasize the experimental safety issues in the overall experimental progress and build a set of Medical laboratory safety and protection for biosafety laboratories with Teacher Xin Zhuoyuan under the overall experimental process. This will provide future full-process training on experimental safety for the iGEM team. For details, see Education.
