With factors such as global climate change, changes in farming practices, and monoculture planting, plant diseases are occurring more frequently, posing a serious threat to global and national food security.

While chemical pesticides have been helpful in addressing these challenges they also bring along their fair share of problems including the development of resistance among pathogens.

This year, ZJU-China also focuses on this issue, trying to create a new biopesticide based on self-amplifying RNA and plant immunity. With their tireless efforts, Flora Sentinel was born!
Therefore, synthetic biologists are exploring the potential of using biopesticides to combat crop diseases.

Flora sentinel's functional part is a long stranded RNA, which can be translated into a modified version of immunoprotein, possessing efficient and targeted resistance against specific pathogens.

And inspired by the concept of RNA vaccines, it has equipped with a platform to move and multiply within plant tissue.

By utilizing Agrobacterium as an engineering bacteria, Flora Sentinel can be formulated into pesticide formulations, making it easy for farmers to use.
